Essay
The Road was a book that I kept reading and did not want to put down to get to the happy ending. There were so many hardships that the Dad and Son went through and overcame. Someone who has been through so much had to have a something good coming for them in my mind. It was all planned out in my head. They would reach their destination and be happy because they have each other. The ending scene to the novel was unexpected and made me want to go back in time and fix everything for them, I did not want to accept such a sad way for their journey to come to a conclusion.
The Dad and the Son have come such a long way and things did seem to get harder but I always had a feeling that it would all work out in the end. When the boy goes to sleep and holds onto his dad it is as if he never wants to let go. He knows his dad is very sick and might not make it one more day but I also had the feeling that he believed in miracles. That when he woke up the next morning his dad would be greeting him with a smile. This did not happen. When the Son woke up my heart broke for him. I could not imagine what he must felt like. Just the thought of it made me wish I could give him a hug and tell him everything would be alright. He had had his dad with him throughout everything, guiding him and comforting him. And one day it was all ripped away from him, in the blink of an eye.
The boy stayed with his dad for three days because he did not want to let go, “he looked down the road and he looked back the way he had come.” That line was when I felt like he did not know how to go on without the person that had been from day one. He had never been on his own and had no idea what to do. I thought the boy was going to just continue down the road but someone else found him before he made a decision to go on his own. I think this was a better way for things to turn out for him rather than having to make decisions by himself. I did not want the little boy to leave the dad because I know it must be so hard to leave behind the person you love. When the man explained to the boy that he was carrying the fire and was good but the decision was up to him I felt like he should go ahead and just leave with them. Hopefully, it would all be for the best.
This last scene in The Road had so much emotion. It was as if everything they had ever dreamed of disappeared without warning. Both of them had so much hope for a new beginning and it was ripped away in an instant.
Is The Journey Over?
When the Dad started to think they couldn’t survive much longer I started to believe it too. They had been struggling for so long. Day after day it did not get any easier. They just needed more food and more clothes and shoes and none was going to magically appear in front of them. When the Dad started to look for a place where they could die and not be found I started to believe that their journey was over.
Hope
Whenever they come upon the smell of cows it made me happy. This meant that there was a living animal being fed by a living person. This would mean that they weren’t alone. I think this gave them hope that there could be another survivor. It was something they had to hold onto in order to keep going.
The Poor
When the man on the road was asking for help and the dad said he couldn’t give him any because they didn’t have anything it made me sad for all of them. The Boy really wanted to help this man and asked his dad if they could but he didn’t realize how bad they had it. They couldn’t even help someone else because they didn’t even have enough for themselves. The poor can’t help the poor.
Fatherly Comfort
As the Dad and the Son kept going on I just wanted to be able to help them. When they reached the time of year where it was extremely cold I felt bad for them. It was always snowing and cold as they went down the road. The Dad always comforts the Son by telling him but it’ll be alright but he doesn’t know that for sure. He can only hope that they will make it day by day. I didn’t want put the book down hoping that there would soon be a happy note.
